To help you identify which kinds of trustees would support the development of your charity and how to recruit them.

Recruiting trustees can be a risky process, sometimes ending in the hiring of candidates that might look good on paper but are unable to commit to the responsibilities required.

You will come away from this training with a clearer idea of the type of trustees you need, a draft advert, a list of free places to advertise, and a plan of how to ensure that new trustees hit the ground running.

Meet the trainer

Getting on Board is a charity that helps individuals, employers and members of professional networks become new leaders in communities through board-level volunteering.

With over ten years' experience in charity law, regulation and governance Lynn Cadman has provided guidance on an extensive range of governance issues and the legal framework in which charities must operate.  Although she has worked with charities of all shapes and sizes, Lynn spent most of her seven year career at the Charity Commission working within the Large Charities Division. She provided bespoke one-to-one guidance to charities with an annual income of £5m-£600m as well as providing legal authority for a broad range of matters such as alterations to governing documents, land transactions, and significant transfers of assets. Lynn also worked within the Commission's investigations function, seeing first-hand the impact that poor governance and insufficient controls can have on a charity.

Since leaving the Commission in February 2012 Lynn has provided consultancy advice and project management to a range of charities, including as an associate of Professional Governance Services Ltd.  Most notably, over the last four years Lynn has worked with the Royal British Legion, initially as a consultant and then Head of Department, to transform its management of >700 charitable trusts of which it is trustee.  This included introducing new policies and procedures for accounting, property management and governance as well as unlocking c.£40m from restricted funds that were no longer effective in meeting beneficiary need.

Lynn is a trustee of Eldon Road Baptist Church and BMS Worldwide and has experienced the joys and challenges of being a charity trustee and a volunteer.  She is also a registered Prince 2 Practitioner and lay member of the Charity Law Association.

  • A draft advert to attract potential trustees
  • A list of ways your charity will advertise for trustees
  • A plan for the recruitment and induction process

Who this course is for

Chief Executive Officers, Managers and Directors of charities and/or trustees. Two people from each organisation (usually CEO and Chair) is most effective but not essential.
