Minister for Social Justice and Local Government, Dr Brian Gibbons, while on a visit to AVOW (Association of Voluntary Organisations in Wrexham) to meet with young volunteers and to present Millennium Volunteer Certificates to six young people, announced funding of £555,000 through the Russell Commission to help increase youth volunteering in Wales.

NHS should embrace voluntary roots, says third sector chief

As the National Health Service celebrates its 60th anniversary, the head of Waless third sector has called for the health service to engage better with people and the organisations they create to address their own needs.

More than 70 years ago, umbrella organisation Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA) then the South Wales and Monmouthshire Council of Social Service - raised funds to pay for district nurses in South Wales, costing an average £100 a year.

A 1935 survey carried out by the Monmouthshire Council had revealed that, at that time, there were 91 District Nurses operating in the area - maintained almost entirely by voluntary funds.

Due a recent cancellation, WCVA now has an exhibition space available at Sbardun, the voluntary sector pavilion at the National Eisteddfod. The Eisteddfod takes place in Cardiff this year between 2 and 9 August.

Sbardun offers charities and voluntary organisations the opportunity to promote campaigns, distribute information, network with voluntary sector colleagues and generally raise awareness at Wales largest cultural event.

Wales made fair trade 'pioneer'

Wales has been declared the world's first fair trade nation by campaigners, for the progress it has made increasing the availability of such goods. A number of targets were set in 2006 by the Wales Fair Trade Forum (WFTF) in consultation with independent experts to reach the fair trade nation goal. These included having fair trade groups in 55% of towns and every county working towards fair trade status.

EU puts European emergency number 112 on the map before summer holidays

The European Commission has stepped up its efforts to promote the use of the charge-free European emergency number 112 in the EU. 112 is the phone number designed to enable everyone to call emergency services anywhere in the European Union, from a fixed or a mobile phone free of charge.A new website ec.europa.eu/112 has been launched to tell citizens how to use 112 and what to expect from it, partucrlary when the travel with the EU. It also shows how 112 functions in each memeber state: how quickly calls are answered and in which lanaguages.
