WCVA sets out sectors priorities for new government

Refunding VAT paid by charities, directing the Big Lottery Fund to commit 100% of its funding to the third sector and removing benefits system barriers for volunteers these are among the ideas that the next UK government could be asked to consider.

In the run-up to this years General Election, WCVA is suggesting a list of priorities to help the sector meet individual and community needs. WCVA Deputy Chief Executive Phil Jarrold said: The next election will be contested against the background of the recession and the squeeze on public expenditure, and future pressure on public services.

The third sector in Wales will be subject to the same pressures, but there are good reasons for government to strengthen its support for the third sector in the current environment - rather than cutting back.

The list, which WCVA is asking the sector to review and feed back on, is described as a series of practical steps that a new government can take to grow the contribution the third sector makes to supporting active participation by people in community life and action.

WCVA member organisations are asked to submit any comments on the priorities identified by 8 March. They should be sent to policy@wcva.org.uk.

WCVA - Future Jobs Fund

Future Jobs Fund is a scheme of huge benefit to both the third sector and young unemployed people. The FJF programme allows groups to gain extra funding and manpower, while also giving unemployed 18-24 year olds the chance to gain vital experience in a paid position. Future Jobs Fund is a Department of Work & Pensions programme, which WCVA is delivering within the third sector across all regions in Wales.

The Framework of Services for Older People will promote the development of the appropriate range of local services working together to respond to the needs and the preferences of older people and their carers. These services should help them to continue or return to live at home or in a homely environment as independently as possible. Independence means either caring for oneself as much as possible or when practical assistance is required, it is based on the older persons own choices and aspirations. This applies equally to those people who fund their own care as well as those whose care is funded by the local authority or NHS.

St John's Ambulance - help in the snow

THE NHS has thanked medical volunteers for their support during the freezing weather.

The helpers from St John Cymru Wales are answering more calls than ever on behalf of the Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, using 4x4 vehicles to get to places which have been inaccessible for ambulances.

In some areas, volunteers have been transporting community nurses in the vehicles to ensure patients get the home care they need.

They have also assisted in getting essential emergency staff to and from hospitals.
