The third sector’s role in climate change
Climate change is one of the most important challenges facing the world. It is not simply an environmental problem: it has profound implications for the economy and for wellbeing of people here in Wales, and across the world.
Taking action to reduce the worst impacts of climate change creates benefits for society as a whole, specifically people at the margins of society. Third sector organisations are uniquely placed to reach the most disadvantaged and to empower them to play their part in creating sustainable communities and in taking action that helps both to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to predicted climate change impacts.
Here you will find information about where to go for help and advice on how your group or organisation can take steps to tackle climate change as well as publicly declaring your commitment to taking action through signing the third sector declaration on climate change. Download our Information Sheet here.
Welsh Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change
The Welsh Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change is targeted at the wider third sector and aims to get the un-engaged to take a first step – it asks people to sign up to some guiding principles on behalf of their group or organisation rather than committing themselves to prescriptive actions.
The declaration can be viewed below . If you wish to sign up please return a copy of declaration signed by the relevant senior person within your organisation (e.g. Chair, Chief Executive, Manager, Director, and Coordinator) to WCVA.

Welsh Assembly Government Climate Change Commission
The Welsh Assembly Government has also established a Climate Change Commission to provide leadership in tackling both the causes and consequences of climate change in Wales. It will build a consenus on the action needed, support the delivery of those actions and advise on the development of policies and programmes. WCVA represents the wider third sector on the commission.

Funding
Are you a third sector organisation or group looking to engage with climate change action for the first time?
Environment Wales now has a new Climate Change Fund grant scheme to enable groups to access funds. They are looking to attract third sector organisations, which have yet to engage with climate change action. The third sector in its entirety has huge potential to tackle the causes and consequences of climate change.
